Every small business owner has seen the pitch: add a chatbot, triple your leads. Here is the honest version from someone who builds websites for a living.
When a chatbot is worth it
A chatbot earns its keep when you get the same questions over and over. Hours, pricing, service area, do you handle emergency calls. It also shines after hours. If half your visitors browse at night, a chatbot is the only employee working that shift, and it can collect a name and phone number so you follow up in the morning.
When it is hype
If your website gets a handful of visitors a week, a chatbot will not fix that. Traffic problems come first. And a badly configured bot that answers everything with please call us actively annoys people. Worse than no bot at all.
What a good setup looks like
Train it on your actual services and prices, give it a way to hand off to you by text or email, and keep the tone human. Setup done right takes a few hours, not weeks, and modern tools cost far less than the enterprise stuff from a few years ago.
The real question
A chatbot is a multiplier. It multiplies whatever your website already does. Good site, more leads. Bad site, faster disappointment. If you want an honest read on whether your site is ready for one, ask me for a free site audit. I will tell you straight, even if the answer is skip the bot for now.
