Switching hosts feels risky, which is exactly why so many businesses stay on hosting they hate. Done in the right order, a migration has zero downtime and your visitors never notice. Here is the process I use when I move client sites.

Step 1: Back Up Everything First

Before you touch anything, take a full backup of your files and database. Use your host's backup tool or a plugin like UpdraftPlus. Download a copy to your own computer. If something goes sideways, this is your undo button.

Step 2: Set Up The New Hosting Account

Buy the new plan before you cancel the old one. The overlap costs a few dollars and removes all the risk. Both SiteGround and Hostinger include free WordPress migration tools that do most of the heavy lifting.

Do not point your domain anywhere yet. The site keeps running on the old host while you work.

Step 3: Copy The Site Over

Use the new host's migrator plugin, or move it manually: upload your files, import your database, and update wp-config.php with the new database credentials. The migrator plugins handle all of this automatically and are the right choice for most people.

Step 4: Test Before You Switch

Every decent host gives you a temporary URL or staging area to preview the copied site. Click through your pages, test your contact form, and log into the admin. Fix anything broken now, while the old site is still live.

Step 5: Flip The DNS

In your domain registrar, lower the TTL a few hours ahead of time if you can, then update the nameservers or A record to the new host. Propagation usually takes minutes to a few hours. Keep the old hosting active for a week as a safety net, then cancel it.

When To Hand It Off

If your site has WooCommerce orders coming in, custom email on the domain, or years of accumulated plugins, one wrong step can get expensive. Migration is included in my website care plans, and I have moved dozens of sites without a minute of downtime.
